The DA has written to the Minister of International Relations to welcome her department’s decision to alter South Africa’s stance regarding the inclusion of reference to sexual orientation in a United Nations resolution on extra-judicial killings.

A month after voting with countries like Iran and Sudan to remove any reference to sexual orientation in the resolution, South Africa reversed its decision, and in so doing helped to reverse the outcome of the resolution vote. We believe this principled decision deserves commendation. South Africans should welcome this refreshing stance from the International Relations department, and urge the minister to continue to advocate a human rights-based approach to foreign policy.
