As South Africa prepares to send a second team of medical professionals to earthquake ravaged Haiti, our thoughts and well wishes are with the South African volunteers in Haiti, and those that are due to arrive. We wish them strength and courage as they help to provide support services, including the provision of health and food supplies to those in desperate need.

The tragic events of last week have rightly shifted the focus of the global community to this Caribbean country, and we welcome the Department of International Relations' commitment to assist in Haiti in any way possible.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations are appealing for donations to assist in their relief efforts in Haiti. On Friday the UN appealed for funds in order to provide urgent supplies. Children make up almost half of Haiti's population. Those wishing to donate to UNICEF can follow this link.

It is also possible to make online donations to other major aid groups working in Haiti like the World Food Programme, Save the Children, and Doctors Without Borders.
