Crime and corruption within the police force in Gauteng continue to undermine the fight against crime in a province where people live in fear.
The DA will request a briefing on crooked cops in Gauteng by Provincial Police Commissioner Mzwandile Petros.
In two years 746 policemen have been arrested and 120 police officers had been dismissed in Gauteng in this year alone. A total of 171 were dismissed last year.
Petros yesterday told the media that a campaign has been introduced to root out corruption in Gauteng’s police force.
The provincial legislature must exercise its important oversight role in terms of Section 206(12) of the Constitution and get answers from the Provincial Police Commissioner.
I will write to the Chairperson of the Community Safety Committee in the Legislature requesting a full briefing by the Provincial Police Commissioner on the extent and prevalence of police crime and corruption and a detailed explanation of the strategy to eradicate it.
Petros must demonstrate that he will not tolerate crooked cops and that the safety and security of the people of Gauteng remains his first priority.
