The DA in Gauteng will take up the issue of racist, offensive and degrading property titles with the Chief Surveyor General Mmuso Riba.
During question time in the Legislature yesterday the DA expressed disgust over the farm name “Kafferskraal”. The property is officially registered with the deeds office as Portion 19 of the farm Kafferskraal 318IR, Heidelberg District.
The DA is also aware of at least 11 other such formal names existing in the deeds registry.
The DA understands that this is a historical remnant and only exists on the records at the deeds office as the formal designation for a technical property division. However, that does not excuse the fact that names such as these, wherever they may be, are offensive, degrading and an insult to the people of South Africa.
It is also an insult to those who sacrificed so much for the freedom we enjoy today and undermines all the gains we have made since the dawn of our democracy.
I will write to the Chief Surveyor General Riba asking how the formal title of a property in the deeds registry is changed and what the requirements are.
Gauteng Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza must also engage with the relevant stakeholders to address this matter.
The DA urges the people of Gauteng to identify similar situations across the province and inform us of where they exist.
The DA in Gauteng will pursue this matter in support of nation-building and reconciliation in this province and South Africa as a whole.
