 The  DA condemns what appears to be an attempted prison escape this afternoon. It led to an unnecessary loss of life and injury. We send our  condolences to the families who lost their loved ones today.

This  is yet another breach of security and calls for a thorough review of the security measures in place when transporting prisoners.

We  need to move towards a situation where courts are established within the prison precincts. This process could start for high-risk prisoners and be extended to other prisoners over time.

We need to bring the courts to the prisoners and not the prisoners to the courts.

I  will be writing to the Minister of Correctional Services to request that he reviews the current method of transporting awaiting-trial prisoners and considers the DA’s proposal on establishing courts within the prison precinct.
