The Democratic Alliance urges Education MEC Me Louisa Mabe and the Provincial Department of Education to act on their promises to the Oom Paul School – a school for special needs children- in paying-off its debts to the school.
The Oom Paul School is a place of comfort to 400 pupils and a home to 110 in the school hostels. The School is dependent on government grants to keep operating and also rents out office space to the Department of Education.
The School has been renting out the offices since 2003 to the Dept. of Health and which was then exchanged with the Education department in 2006. The Offices is connected to the schools Water & Electricity supply and only in 2006 was a separate electricity meter installed.
The current amount owed by the School to the Rustenburg Local Council is R3.8 million. The schools electricity supply is frequently cut-off leaving the pupils in the scared in the dark. In May this year R1.7 Million was paid to the school and a recent promise of a further R2.4 million to be paid in November.
The situation is not sustainable and cannot continue and we will monitor the progress and situation here and in all schools in the North-West province closely.
