The Democratic Alliance welcomes the establishment of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC). We believe that it will add to the strength of the democratic foundations of our country. The DA places at the centre of its focus the democratic constitutional order, the rule of law and the protection of human rights. Organs of civil society need to engage more consistently on issues related to the constitution, and we hope that CASAC can play a catalytic role in facilitating this engagement. All levels of our society from individual citizens, through formal and informal organisations, political parties and state organs must play their role in furthering the objectives outlined in our Constitution. We hope that CASAC will contribute towards a rich debate on the constitutional values that should underpin our society, and create the conditions for our development and progress as a nation.
