It is with sadness that we receive the news of the passing of former Deputy Minister of Safety and Security, Joe Matthews, who passed away on Thursday. On behalf of the Democratic Alliance, our condolences go out to Minister of Science and Technology, Ms. Naledi Pandor, and the entire Matthews family. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Matthews devoted his entire life to public service and the principles of democracy, a devotion which required significant personal sacrifice. Over the six decades of his active involvement in South African politics, he showed that he was selflessly committed to improving the lives of others. His passing is a loss to us all.
