The Democratic Alliance welcomes Deputy President Motlanthe’s announcement that the 2011 election will take place on the 18th of May.

In a little over two months, South Africans will have an opportunity to exercise their most important power in a democracy: the power of their vote. This promises to be the most exciting election yet. The ANC is deeply divided and the DA has a chance to take our track record of delivery for all to every South African.

The DA is a party of government for all South Africans. We are in government in the Western Cape, in Cape Town and in many other municipalities across the country. And where we are in government, we are creating new opportunities for all, speeding up service delivery to all, and cracking down on crime and corruption.

People want change and they want it now. So, as the country counts down to Election Day, we have a very clear idea of our mission and our motivation in this election: where voters have put their confidence in us, we have delivered for all. With a strong track record in government, we can now deliver in towns and cities across South Africa.

The DA commits itself to a peaceful election campaign and we challenge every other party to do the same. Let the election be free, fair and without political violence. Let the people decide what kind of governance they want.
