With the 2010 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, the Democratic Alliance (DA) encourages lodging and hospitality professionals to register their businesses with tourism authorities without delay. The final fixtures draw is scheduled for 4 December 2009 and a surge of applications for approval by tourism authorities are expected. Around 400,000 tourists from all over the world will be scouring tourism board websites in search of places to stay. Being marketed to tourists is just one of the many benefits of registering with tourism boards such as Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town Tourism to mention only a few. The boards promote different types of accommodation choices on their websites, as well as through brochures and other marketing material. However, to avoid delays and to fully benefit from this marketing tool, the DA would urge hospitality professionals to first enquire about exactly what documentation local tourism bodies need to accompany applications. Each tourism body has different minimum standards for safety and hygiene as well as requirements such as proof of business registration, licensing, a zoning certificate and public liability insurance. Early applications accompanied by the necessary documentation will ensure a speedy registration process. These efforts can assist in making sure everything is in place to show the world the best that South Africa can offer.
