The Gauteng Local Government and Housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe clearly has a “hands off” approach to her portfolio, and has no grasp on what goes on in local government in the province.

This became apparent during oral question time at the Gauteng Legislature today when she was unable to answer my questions on the audit outcomes for municipalities in Gauteng.

Her excuse was that she will only be able to answer the questions after attending a briefing by the Auditor General this Friday. This is despite the fact that she has the power to access this information by requesting it directly from the municipalities.

It is obvious that the MEC has no interest in exercising real leadership in her department. This is of great concern since local government protests are a regular occurrence.

I will persist in my questioning of the MEC until she answers my questions.
