Next Monday will mark nine months since the announcement of Gill Marcus's appointment as Reserve Bank Governor. The Democratic Alliance (DA) had the pleasure of a three hour meeting with the Governor this week, and we remain convinced that Ms. Marcus has been an excellent choice for the position.
The DA had a highly productive meeting with the governor, in which a number of key areas of the monetary policy and the Bank's management were discussed. Ms. Marcus reaffirmed our view that she is running the Reserve Bank effectively, and she continues to demonstrate commitment to running an open and honest Reserve Bank. Crucially, the Governor's leadership style has not conflated independence with arrogance - she maintains a pragmatic, constructive approach to managing the Bank, which helps to sooth antagonisms across the political spectrum, and render the Reserve Bank a politically neutral, constitutionally guided, and fundamentally democratic institution.
The Reserve Bank remains a shining example of excellence for the rest of our state institutions.
Last July, when she was appointed, we said we believed Ms. Marcus's experience of the banking sector, both as a previous Deputy Reserve Bank governor and her work in the private sector, would stand her in good stead for the position. Certainly, on the evidence of her first nine months in office, the Governor has met and surpassed our expectations.
