The DA is saddened by the news of the tragic helicopter crash in Witbank that killed seven SAPS members, most of whom were from the National Intervention Unit. The National Intervention Unit is charged with, amongst other things, stabilising high-risk crime situations. The officers were returning from an armed robbery in Witbank, where they had apprehended three suspects when the helicopter reportedly hit electricity wires. Their loss in the line of duty is all the more devastating.

On behalf of the DA, I would like to offer my condolences and extend my deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the deceased, as well as to the broader SAPS family. It is a tragedy when those that are fighting to preserve life are they themselves killed. These members will be remembered for their bravery and their contribution to trying to make South Africa a safer place.
