This morning I formally put a motion to the Police Portfolio committee that it conduct special hearings on the continuing saga involving the reinstated head of Crime Intelligence, Richard Mdluli.
I specifically requested that the committee inquire into the decision to terminate the disciplinary proceedings against Mdluli and the decision to reinstate him despite the raft of allegations against him.
I also put it to the committee that Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Acting National Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi be summoned to explain these decisions, specifically who made them and what the justification was.
Although there was initially some opposition to the request, after extensive debate there was broad agreement among members that the committee must exercise its oversight functions and call the Minister to appear if necessary.
However, no date was set down and no formal commitment was made in this regard.
This is not enough. The Democratic Alliance (DA) will continue to push for a clear agenda for the committee to effectively address the matter.
Additionally, the DA will also announce its comprehensive strategy tomorrow to tackle the Mdluli saga in Parliament. I will also take it up directly with the Minister in my speech on the police budget tomorrow afternoon.
Too many questions remain unanswered for this matter not to be thoroughly examined by Parliament.
