The Democratic Alliance (DA) will request that the newly appointed acting head of Crime Intelligence, Chris Ngcobo, brief the Police Portfolio Committee in 30 days on his strategy for rooting out the rot and tackling the chaos that is the Crime Intelligence division in the South African Police Service.
Major General Ngcobo was appointed today as Acting Divisional Commissioner for Crime Intelligence, Protection and Security Services by National Police Commissioner Mangwashi Phiyega and takes over from the controversial Richard Mdluli, currently suspended from the service.
The DA notes with satisfaction Ngcobo’s experience in the service. Ngcobo has served 17 years in the Protection and Intelligence services since 1994. The DA also takes comfort from the fact that Ngcobo is believed to have a firm grasp of management values and undercover experience. We hope that he will seek to restore the reputation of crime intelligence activities.
I will accordingly request that Ngcobo appears before the police portfolio committee in the last week of July to brief the committee on the state of the Crime Intelligence, Protection and Security Services and how he intends to address the highly publicised challenges affecting the division. This should include dismissing and charging anyone found to have plundered the Crime Intelligence ‘slush fund’.
We will be monitoring Ngcobo’s tenure at the helm of a division dogged by controversy, allegations of mismanagement and looting. We believe he will have his work cut out for him and trust that restoring the integrity and credibility of Crime Intelligence will be his top priority.
