If an investigation into Julius Malema's alleged attempts to dodge a speeding fine does not go ahead as promised, it will be a clear indication that certain governing party officials are using their positions to unduly influence legal systems and procedures in their favour. According to media reports this morning, Limpopo officials will not be investigating Malema allegedly being caught doing 107km in a 60km zone and then bullying officials to circumvent the law last week as they see no basis for a probe. This directly contradicts the assurances made by Deputy Minister of Transport Jeremy Cronin in the National Assembly that no-one is above the law and that the department will be seeking to establish what exactly happened. However, it now seems that Cronin's backing of the traffic officers involved to "do their business without fear or favour" has not filtered through to the province or the officers involved who were reportedly rounded up by traffic chiefs and issued with threatening letters for their mistreatment of the head of the ANC Youth. Limpopo officials reportedly claim to not be aware of Cronin's promise of an investigation and roads department spokesperson Wisani Ngobeni is even sticking to his story that the incident was a "hoax". We also await an explanation from Malema. According to reports, when he was pulled over by officers he had a set of blue lights handy, and tried to use them to intimidate the officers. Blue lights and security personnel seem to be a fashion accessory for Malema - like Paris Hilton's dog in the handbag. The DA will be posing further parliamentary questions on the matter, to establish exactly how this matter is being investigated, or indeed whether Malema has been let off the hook.
