Tomorrow I will be attending the South African Police Service (SAPS) release of the 2010/2011 crime statistics in Pretoria. According to the invitation the SAPS will be holding a closed meeting at 10am before releasing the statistics to the media at 11am.
There is no good reason to exclude the media from this briefing, which is why I have consistently called for full transparency in this matter. It is my intention to ensure that all information released in the closed meeting will be made available to the media.
The public needs a transparent and accountable police service, and an honest assessment of the success rate of the police in tackling crime. In the name of increasing trust and accountability, I repeat my call on the Minister to make transparency the order of the day in the annual release.
