In August last year, DA MP Wilmot James and I laid criminal charges at the Claremont Police Station against then General Bheki Cele, Minister Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, Mr Roux Shabangu and Mr Siviwe Dongwana arising from the SAPS lease saga involving Mr Shabangu. We laid the charges based on evidence in the Public Protector’s report into the SAPS lease deal, which found serious maladministration and “reckless” dealings with public funds.
I have subsequently been furnished with further information regarding three bank accounts from an anonymous source, who believes that they are related to this matter. I have delivered these to the Hawks.
Last week, Lt-General Anwa Dramat’s office confirmed that “the investigation is still ongoing” and we will be advised of the outcome.
No further details were given, but it is clear that an investigation is being conducted, and we must assume that if there were no evidence, the case would have been closed by now.
The DA will continue following up on the matter and we hope that the Hawks are not dragging their feet on completing the investigation.
In light of growing reports of corruption in the country, we trust that this investigation will be completed speedily and those responsible held accountable. It will go a long way towards restoring credibility to our criminal justice system.
