The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the announcement on the terms of reference of the Commission of Inquiry into the arms deal to chaired by Judge Willie Seriti.

President Jacob Zuma has taken a brave step in appointing this Commission of Inquiry.

The terms of reference, announced today by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Jeff Radebe, appear to be comprehensive. They include an inquiry into:

• the rationale for the arms deal;
• whether any contract related to the procurement process was tainted by any fraud or corruption; and
• whether the offsets and job opportunities expected to flow from the arms deal materialized.

The Commission has the power to subpoena witnesses and will have two years in which to complete its work.

The Commission must now get on with its business so that we can get to the truth about what could turn out to be the biggest corruption scandal in the history of South Africa.
