The DA in North West remains concerned about the widespread availability of drugs on the streets especially in areas with a high concentration of students in Potchefstroom
The DA welcomes the arrest of a drug-dealer operating in the vicinity of student residences but noted with concern that the Nigerian citizen was arrested while being out on bail after an arrest during July. The repeated cycle of arrests and granting of bail to the same drug-dealers with no convictions forthcoming creates the impression that the drug-dealers have decoded the SAPS and criminal justice system and are operating with impunity within the system.
The wide availability of drugs in the vicinity of schools warrants specialized intervention – the DA already called for the re-establishment of SANAB – the disbanded specialized SAPS unit, which for years successfully combatted the drug-problem in areas with a high number of vulnerable people, such as Potchefstroom
