The ANC’s denial that the present protests in the Western Cape is not directed at destabilizing the Cape Town City and the Provincial Government is in stark contrast with the ANC’s acknowledgement that similar “service delivery protests in the North West were politically driven and motivated.
The MEC for Local Government, China Dodovo, recently accused the ANC’s Provincial Chairman, Supra Mahumapelo of being behind the service delivery protests in the North West. He added that Mahumapelo was alleged to have orchestrated the protests in an effort to oust Premier Thandi Modise.
Dodovo announced further that the Provincial Government had set up a task team to investigate the protests – in the process once again blurring the line between government and the ANC and abusing public funds to investigate ANC factional fighting.
The continuing widespread and often violent North West protests have debilitating effect on the NW SAPS compromising the already stretched policing efforts. The blocking of major roads, arson, looting as well the disruption of teaching and learning is part of the arsenal of the protestors.
The protests, which now appeared to have become part and parcel of the day to day activities of the NW ANC, are being identified as politically motivated in the North West – however similar protest are being expediently regarded by the ANC as genuine in a City and Province not governed by the ANC.
