That a security guard for a private security company played (whether inadvertently or not) a subverted and racist version of the national anthem, which denigrated former President Nelson Mandela and contained various racist phrases and words, is disgraceful. It is insulting and damaging and should be condemned in the harshest possible terms. The Democratic Alliance welcomes the news that the relevant individual has been fired. The incident occurred this past weekend, when the offensive song was played at a Falcon Security stand, at a family day function held at Sun City. South Africa has made great strides towards eliminating racism, but there are still a minority of people who hold racist prejudices and act in a racist manner. They are pariahs and outcasts and they have no place in the new South Africa. The damage they inflict on race relations is disproportionately large, compared to their actual influence, because our society is rightly so sensitive to the issue. For this reason alone their behaviour must be dealt with decisively and unequivocally, so that the majority of South Africans, who have embraced the new South Africa and everything it stands for, can move on with their lives and building a better democracy.
