This extract is based on a speech delivered by DA Young Leader and DA Councillor in the Tlokwe municipality, Johann Coetzee, at a DA Youth protest outside Kleinfontein, Gauteng. The speech was delivered in both English and Afrikaans.
I am proud of my culture.
I am proud of my heritage.
I am proud of my language.
But I am not proud of apartheid.
And I am not proud of what is going on here at Kleinfontein.
Kleinfontein is not about protecting language, culture and heritage. It is about keeping people separate based on the colour of their skin. It is a group of people who want to re-create apartheid in this enclave.
Today I am proud to stand up and say: “Not in my name!”
Today I am proud to say that I want to be part of an inclusive and prosperous South Africa.
South Africa has its problems, but look how far we have come.
We have replaced the rule of a minority with the rule of law where everybody is equal before the law. We have a Constitution that protects everybody’s rights to live a life they value.
With these rights come responsibilities: reconciliation, understanding and tolerance.
This does not mean tolerating racism. We must fight racism wherever we see it. Racism has no place in a democratic and prosperous South Africa.
Let us celebrate our diverse cultures and protect our rich heritage. But let us never do it in a way that excludes people based on the colour of their skin.
Let us build this great nation, together. One nation, One future!
