The DA can reveal that the provincial government, NMB municipality, NPA and SIU are conspiring to protect Linda Mti from prosecution, because the ANC and its deployed cadres are the defenders of corruption.

Danny Jordaan’s appointment of Linda Mti to high office in the Bay is confirmation of his commitment to upholding corruption in our municipality. The DA has fought this since it was first proposed.

The SIU’s Sefura Mongalo last week reported to EWN that their BOSASA corruption report was only completed in April 2013, at which point it was handed to the Presidency.

The DA can disclose that this directly contradicts a 7 December 2009 NPA statement which explicitly outlines how the completed SIU report had been received and forwarded to SAPS for further investigation at a time when Willie Hofmeyr was still head of the SIU.

Then Minister of Correctional Services, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, was also handed the report and chose to do nothing with it.

The DA can thus reveal that the SIU is lying to delay the conclusion of this matter by claiming their was only completed 4 years later than it actually was.

I wrote to NPA Head, Adv Shaun Abrahams, on 6 May 2016 requesting the disclosure of reasons as to why Linda Mti had not yet been prosecuted. Having confirmed receipt of my letter, Abrahams has to date not responded to my request.

Instead  Abrahams’ Chief of Staff, Danie Schmidt, wrote to me on 14 June 2016 claiming that no letter was received and that its contents were only revealed in the media over the weekend of the 11 and 12 June 2016 when myself and DA Shadow Minister of Justice, Adv Glynnis Breytenbach MP, held a press conference on this matter.

The DA can therefore reveal that the apparently captured NPA is also lying in a desperate attempt to protect Linda Mti because under the thumb of the ANC, corruption is protected and not fought.

CoGTA MEC, Fikile Xasa, has still not regularised the appointment of Linda Mti, despite the Municipal Systems Act requiring approval from the MEC within 14 days. Months have passed since Mti was appointed, and without regularisation from the MEC, the Act stipulates that the appointment is irregular and null and void.

Having committed to conduct an investigation into why the NMB municipality hadn’t informed him of Mti’s appointment, Xasa has now backtracked and is instead protecting the municipality for having clearly ignored the law.

This string of lies, deception and obfuscation is symptomatic of an ANC and its various government agencies who continue to steadfastly defend corruption and cadre deployment.

There is no apparent reason why Linda Mti should not be prosecuted, given the scathing findings of the SIU investigation which was completed in 2009, first made public by the City Press in 2010.

I will this week open a case against Linda Mti with the SAPS, presenting the SIU report as compelling evidence.

The DA will continue to fight corruption by those working for this municipality. We are ready to govern here, to usher in a clean administration, focusing on stopping corruption, and delivering better services.
