COSATU will be hosting the end of year senior citizens event at the V&A Waterfront today from 11h00. The high point of the day will be a celebration of the year at 12h30, where the plans for next year’s senior citizens events will be announced.

This senior citizens event for working families and retired COSATU members is now in its 8th year and has grown from strength to strength. The events entail an outing once a month to a popular Cape Town destinations. COSATU arranges free trains and busses to transport the seniors to the events. COSATU has collaborated with Government in the last for the events for senior citizens. When Premier Zille took over, she refused to honour the commitments made by Premier Lynn Brown to support the poor seniors. Zille would rather spend R50 million on an advertising budget to lie to the people of Cape Town, than to improve the lives of poor Cape Flats senior citizens.

COSATU is certain that Zille tried to sabotage the events with getting De Lille to refuse the use of the facilities in Cape Town. COSATU has however worked with the National Government Departments and the Private Sector where the Unions have shares, to continue running the programme. COSATU will today announce that the rich mainly White supporters of Zille must not use the free days to come and enjoy themselves, as every day is a special day for them. They continue to enjoy the apartheid generational advantages that are promoted in this City for the mainly White communities in the fancy suburbs.

COSATU will continue to run this event for working class senior citizens from the Cape Flats, who were denied access to these areas in the past. This is our way of undoing the legacy of apartheid that Zille and De Lille Is desperate to maintain in Cape Town.

The press is invited to a press briefing at 13h00 at the event, which includes music and entertainment, at the Amphitheatre at the Waterfront.
