The Congress of South African Trade Unions notes that today marks exactly six months since the Sunday Time (10 April 2011) published damning allegations of corruption against the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka.

These allegations include misusing public monies (under the pretext of performing World Cup duties as then Chairperson of the World Cup Host Cities Forum) for a personal trip to Switzerland, in which thousands were spent on flight tickets, hotel stays and an expensive limousine.

COSATU notes the investigation conducted by the Public Protector into these allegations. The federation is concerned however that neither President nor government has assured the public that these allegations are untrue.

The snail’s pace progress relating to the investigation has serious implications for public confidence in public representatives and the government.

If government is to maintain and restore people’s trust and confidence, then it is absolutely essential that those who are accused of betraying citizens’ trust and utilise state resources for private gain must be brought to book.

COSATU calls on President Jacob Zuma to demonstrate political will in dealing with corruption by bringing the Minister’s case to finality.
