The Congress of South African Trade Unions congratulates the Members of Parliament who, since their election in April, have been robustly confronting and debating issues and interrogating leading figures in the portfolio committees.

Members have tackled such issues as labour broking, mismanagement at the SABC, xenophobia, climate change, the SAPS, high food prices, anti-competitive practices and many more.

There has been a very welcome absence of any trace of sycophancy, and a determination to go out and check what is happening in the country and hold those responsible to account for their successes and failures.

This is a refreshing change from the past when MPs felt intimidated and failed to perform their duty to act as guardians of the public interest. Long may they continue to confront issues and individuals on our behalf without fear, and act as the watchdogs of the people of South Africa who elected them.
