The Congress of South African Trade Unions is deeply disturbed at the shocking number of police officers who have been attacked and murdered in the recent period.

We send our condolences to all the families and colleagues of those who have lost their lives and a message of support and solidarity to all SAPS members to put their lives on the line every day in order to protect us from crime.

COSATU urges government to initiate a high-level discussion on how to deal with this crisis, including possible changes in the law to impose harsher sentences on anyone found guilty of pointing a gun at a police officer. As they struggle to protect our lives, we owe it to our police to do everything possible to protect theirs.
