The Congress of South African Trade Unions strongly supports the campaign of its affiliate, the Creative Workers Union of South Africa, for more opportunities for African cultural workers to benefit from the Fifa World Cup.
CWUSA is rightly angry that creative workers in our country and the continent have been overlooked by both 2010 World Cup Local Organizing Committee and FIFA.
In particular it is a scandal that the World Cup concert scheduled for 10 June 2010, at the Orlando Stadium, Soweto, will feature only three local artists and nine+ from elsewhere. The federation urges all its members to support CWUSA's rolling mass action at the 2010 World Cup Local Organizing Committee's offices in Nasrec to protest against this plan.
As CWUSA says: "This is an African World Cup and it's for Africa. Creative workers are part and parcel in displaying the rich heritage of our country and continent through their involvement and participation". COSATU shares its affiliate's demands:
1. That 80% participation of South Africa and Africa's creative workers in all 2010 World Cup cultural events, as part of job creation and consolidation of national unity and cohesion agenda;
2. That the line-up for the 10th June 2010 World Cup Concert, in Orlando Stadium must be mainly South African and African artists, and so called ‘American' international artists;
3. 100% local content and programming for the World Cup through radio and television;
4. A clear cultural programme as part of the legacy spin offs of the 2010 World Cup;
5. A publicly sanctioned procurement process of artists and technical personnel in all cultural events;
6. Temporary union membership for all international artists' prior artists being commissioned and endorsed by the LOC.
We back the union's call on all patriotic South Africans and internationalist to join the struggle to reclaim the 2010 World Cup to advance the interests of the working class and the poor, as opposed to hosting a jamboree and looting spree for football's ruling oligarchy.
