The Congress of South African Trade Unions congratulates Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, the Deputy Minister of Public Works, who has named the rapist who impregnated her 20 years ago at a school in Soshanguve. It takes a lot of guts for someone to do this

According to the Sowetan, the minister, who is visually impaired, was raped at a school "where disabled pupils were being raped by scum masquerading as teachers and security". She reported the incident to the Department of Education but was not taken seriously and was expelled from the school in 1989 while in Grade 8.

Her courageous announcement should be a clarion call for all women and girls who have suffered rape and abuse from people they should have been able to trust - family members, teachers, neighbours - to follow her lead and come forward to call the perpetrators to account, so that they can be brought to justice.

According to the Sowetan, the man named by the minister is now a senior official in the Department of Basic Education. COSATU demands that he be charged and if convicted removed from society.
