The Congress Of the South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is dismayed at the way the DA-led W Cape government is treating the poor people of Makhaza section in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
COSATU has learnt with shock that the DA-run municipality of Cape Town built toilets with no walls for this impoverished African community. We have seen dehumanizing pictures in the media of people having to cover themselves in blankets when they have to relieve themselves in these open-air toilets.
This is a clear indication to the people of South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape that the DA has no interest of poor people, particularly Africans, at heart.
It goes without saying that under the DA rule in the Eastern Cape, Africans, particularly the poor will continue to be treated as second-class citizens.
It is ironic that the DA has always been claiming to be the party that upholds and respects the constitution, but they have put the people of Makhaza under inhumane conditions, violating their right to dignity.
COSATU agrees with the ANC that the DA's practice is reminiscent of the apartheid era where people were forced to relieve themselves in open bushes.
The federation also supports the move by the ANCYL to lodge a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission forcing the city council to build toilet walls for the Makhaza residents.
