The Department of Correctional Services will continue with the rollout of Minister Michael Masutha’s initiative of upgrading and improving the conditions of 300 schools around the country, culminating in the handing over of school shoes to disadvantaged learners in the Western Cape on Friday, 23 January 2015.

Safety and security are directly related to socio-economic development and equality. A safe, and secure, country encourages economic growth and transformation, by providing an environment conducive to employment creation, improved education and health outcomes and strengthened social cohesion.

As part of country-wide efforts to reduce re-offending, recidivism and ensure sustainable social reintegration, where victims of crime and communities are major beneficiaries, DCS has identified Wesbank Primary School, in the Western Cape, which has many poor and vulnerable learners. Due to the high unemployment rate in the area, and subsequent increasing crime rate, many learners have been affected by crime.

It is reported that at least 60% of Grade 3 learners at the school do not have proper school uniform. To this end, DCS, in partnership with other stakeholders, will hand over school shoes to disadvantaged learners at Wesbank Primary School.
