Congress of the people (COPE) welcome the long-awaited dismissal of Commissioner Bheki Cele following a long and thorough going enquiry into his professional behaviour into the investigation into the manipulation
of the tender procedures in the SAPS.
We therefore applaud the systematic and professional and fearless way in which both the Public Protector and Judge Jake Moloi and team carried themselves in dealing with this task.
It is our hope that all chapter nine institutions can continue to perform in their various offices with similar sternness, impartiality and lack of fear as it has been illustrated by this inquiry.
COPE is however surprised by the appointment of the new Police Commissioner, Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega because we thought the President would have appointed a tried and tested individual with extensive
experience.
COPE does not believe that the appointment of Mangwashi Victoria Phiyaga is good since she lacks the relevant experience.
COPE also hopes the new commissioner will take the nation away from the shoot to kill rhetoric into a more community orientated policing.
The shoot to kill had created hostility between the public and the police, and the new commissioner is faced with a enormous task of changing the rhetoric.
