Umalusi’s announcement today that Limpopo and Eastern Cape are ready
to conduct matric exams is ‘unfair and misleading’.
Congress of the People (COPE) believes it is expected that pupils in
both troubled provinces would have been given more time to recover
following a predicament they are mix up with. We view the monitoring
body’s (Umalusi) argument that Grade 12 learners were not affected by
the education crisis in both provinces as mischievous because it
undermines the constitutional right to basic education.
COPE discourages the culture of allowing pupils write exams even when
we know they are not ready. We need these pupils to add value to the
quality of their results which will eventually improve the standard of
education in the country.
COPE proposes that pupils in both provinces be afforded an opportunity
to undergo an intensive teaching and learning phase ahead of their
crucial exams. The time to indulge in blame games is no more because we
should collectively focus on helping them achieve desired results.
