The Auditor-General’s damning report on financial mismanagement in the Basic Education department is a further demonstration of Minister Angie Motshekga’s inability to lead the all important department. Section 237 (Chapter 14) of our Constitution states very clearly that “all constitutional obligations must be performed diligently and without delay.”
As a Minister in charge of the Education Department, Motshekga should have been at the forefront encouraging accountability, coherence and efficiency in the scandal riddled department. By failing to adequately report on the service delivery targets of the national and provincial education departments; the Minister and her senior management failed to undertake constitutional obligations.
Congress of the People (COPE) has in the past criticised Motshekga’s ability to lead and questioned her interest in the right to basic education of millions of South African children as enshrined in the Constitution. COPE once again call on President Jacob Zuma to fire the Minister to safe the country some further embarrassment.
