COPE is disturbed to learn that the State President is considering
appointing Mo Shaik as the Director General of the National
Intelligence Agency.
Shaik has behaved in a partisan and unprofessional manner over the
years, particularly in relation to his testimony to the Hefer
Commission and in relation to the trial of his brother, Shabir Shaik
and the charges finally dropped against the President, Jacob Zuma.
The NIA is already a challenged department, its reputation not what it
should be. Such an appointment would simply discredit the department
even further.
Along with reputation of the NPA, the JSC and other similar
institutions, this would be another blow to the credibility of our
state organs.
We urge the President not to even consider Shaik for this or any other
intelligence related role.
