The Congress of the People commends Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo for his principled stance in turning down the proposed illegal extension of his term in office by the President. He clearly did this to protect the office of the Chief Justice and the judiciary in general. His appointment was also fraught with controversy, not because of himself, but because of the ineptitude of the government and the Presidency in particular.
The Chief Justice has shown that he is a person of integrity who holds the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in sovereign regard. In knowing when to stand aside, the Chief Justice has protected the integrity of his office and of the Constitution of the Republic.
Chief Justice Ngcobo will leave his office on the 14th August 2011 with the best wishes of the Congress of the People and gratitude for a job well done over the course of his tenure.
