COPE is concerned that, fresh from Zimbabwe, ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has insulted a journalist from the BBC and had him thrown out of a media conference held at Luthuli House. He called the journalist a "bastard" and an "agent"

The behaviour of Malema is similar to the way journalists are mistreated and abused in Zimbabwe. This behaviour takes place in the context of recent bullying by Floyd Shivambo and allegations of bribery of a journalist in a matter involving Noluthando Vavi.

COPE is worried by these incidents that show intolerance to press freedom. We urge the ruling party to restrain Malema as we stand on the eve of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His outbursts are frankly embarrassing and do not represent the views of the vast majority of rational South Africans of all races.
