The Congress of the People is pleased that the Jacob Maroga saga appears to be finally coming to a close with Eskom today confirming his resignation.

At the heart of the matter was the battle for good governance and a vision to take the public enterprise forward in a sustainable way. It is clear that the government and the former CEO had a different vision, focussing more on the political posturing they have displayed by playing the race card. It is crucial for the future of energy production for South Africa that Eskom works. Given the poor performance of the parastatal, this kind of palace politics was reckless. It is a pity that Eskom has lost Mr Godsell in the process. His track record made him an excellent choice to provide leadership to the board.

Given this deplorable state of affairs, the governments failure to see renewable or clean energy as of strategic significance and the desire of the public to see real change, COPE is spearheading an multi party initiative called "CASE", the campaign for Clean Affordable Sustainable Energy, the vision for which will be launched early next week. We do this not for the sake of petty politics, but rather for all the people of South Africa, who are desperate for a new way to tackle the energy crisis..
