COPE is aware that this wasteful expenditure was used to entertainment and purchase tickets for politicians and senior officials at Municipalities, Provincial and national Departments.
On July 10 2010, in an attempt to make people believe he was acting on this wasteful expenditure; the Finance Minister released a statement stating that he is meeting with the Auditor-General and SCOPA Chairperson, to deal with this matter. But the meeting never took place.
COPE views the Minister’s intention as dishonest and dubious. To date, COPE asked the Minister;
(a) What is the total amount spent purchasing World Cup tickets?
(b) Whether any action has been taken against officials responsible for this fruitless expenditure? However, the Minister flatly refused to answer the questions.
The Minister has become popular for not honouring his commitments and misleading South Africans.
We therefore call on the Minister to be honest, and tell us how tax payers’ money was misused by politicians and senior government officials during the Soccer World Cup..
