Vetaran Photographer, Mr Alf Khumalo, was a true freedom fighter who fought the evil apartheid regime through his lens. Congress of the People (COPE) extends its heartfelt condolences to the Khumalo family, friends, and the Journalism fraternity.
When Political activists were mobilising across the nation and outside the country’s boarders; journalism activists like Khumalo made sure that the messages were communicated to the masses through artistic expression and images. He played a pivotal role in the South African political struggle and continued with his inspiring work in the democratic dispensation, winning the Nat Nakasa Award in 2005 for Media Integrity for displaying courageous journalism throughout his professional career.
COPE President, Mosiuoa Lekota remembers Khumalo as a courageous and fearless journalist who believed in the attainment of freedom and valued and understood democracy. “Mr Khumalo was a true hero and a servant of the South African community. He is one of the comrades who risked their lives despite warnings and threats by the regime to tell the world about a troubled apartheid South Africa. He captured important events in South African history including President P.W Botha’s offer to Mr. Nelson Mandela for his freedom on condition that he (Mr Mandela) 'unconditionally rejected violence as a political weapon', Said Mr. Lekota.
May his soul Rest In Peace!
