The shooting at Marikane Mine in the North West Province which resulted into a massacre is a tragedy in this time of our democracy.

We cannot lose lives in this way when our constitution gives the right to life, and the right of association.

The level of intolerable behaviour that is noticeable in this conflict from both unions is unacceptable.

It is a sad day for the families of those who lost their loved ones, bread-winners and parents. It is disappointing that leadership from both Unions failed to resolve the impasse, leading to the loss of lives. COPE says one life lost is one too many.

COPE would like to convey its heartfelt condolences to the families of all the people who lost their lives in the tragedy.

We are calling for a serious intervention by government to bring normality and stability in that area where the political leadership is clearly failing.

The time to play the blame game and political point scoring is over but leadership has to bring an end to this agony.

COPE reiterates its call for an investigation by an independent body which must establish what instigated the killings.

In order for calm to return in that area proper policing packaged with genuine political and trade union solution to the problem must be found urgently.

COPE believes the magnitude of this massacre warrants a comprehensive report by the police to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police.
