Congress of the People (COPE) is worried that Mr Selebi’s release is sending a message that not all people are equal before the law.We believe his release will encourage people to do more crime and corruption without fear of being punished for their actions.

We were informed by media reports about Mr Selebi ill-health but no one has medical records or facts on the state of his health.

Similar situations are playing out in our prisons where there are inmates who cannot even feed themselves and are in dire need of help.

COPE will follow the matter up this matter with the department of Correctional Services to establish if correct procedures were followed.

We want to encourage families and friends of prisoners who are terminally ill to apply for medical parole of their loved ones.
