Parliament has confirmed that the Congress of the People's (Cope's) Parliamentary funding has been frozen with immediate effect, the SABC reported on Thursday.

Spokesperson Luzuko Jacobs confirmed to the SABC that this was done at the request of the party's president Mosiuoa Lekota on Wednesday.

The funding is the money that was supposed to be allocated to the party for the next quarter. The amount was less than R2-million, according to the report.

Jacobs told the broadcaster that no reason was given for the request.

Lekota reportedly made the request after receiving information that the party's chief whip and deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa had unilaterally changed the signatories on the accounts.

Lekota has on a number of occasions claimed that there were financial irregularities with the money received from Parliament.
