Cong
o officials said no one won a majority in a July 30 election,
so the country will hold a runoff to decide between President
Joseph Kabila and former rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba, the
Associated Press reported.
Kabila won 45% of 16,9-million votes and Bemba 20%, the wire
service said, citing Electoral Commission Chairman Apollinaire Malu
Malu. The other 31 candidates split the remaining votes, the AP
said.
The new election will probably take place in October, after the
first vote is certified, the AP said.
Kabila's security forces and Bemba loyalists exchanged gunfire
outside the election commission headquarters Aug. 20, killing a
soldier, the AP said.
