Mark Davids started his career at the City more than 35 years ago as a small plant operator where he operated dumpers, compressors and various other fleet machinery. Thereafter, he advanced to a City fleet garage attendee. This position equipped him with the skills to be promoted to a special category driver to operate mechanical plant and abnormal vehicles. These services are required across the City by various directorates such as Water and Sanitation, Sports and Recreation and Urban Mobility.

Mark exemplifies dedication, an excellent work ethic, a teachable spirit and has a contagious sense of positivity about him which makes it a pleasure to work with him, especially in his current senior superintendent role which requires him to advise and train the upcoming mechanical plant operators. This he does effortlessly as he is very passionate about transferring his old school work ethic and skills to the young workers entering the field.

‘We celebrate Mark and all the other long service officials for their sacrifices and dedication to excellent service delivery to Cape Town's residents. The City is a world-class employer, committed to creating a fair working environment that allows us to recognise and reward staff for their service to the City, and to the residents of Cape Town,' said Alderman Theresa Uys, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services.

‘My journey at the City started when I was only 20 years old. It has been a fulfilling one because it provided me with an opportunity to be part of an organisation that makes a real difference in the everyday lives of the residents in our city. It has always brought me great joy to see the smiles on the resident’s faces once a job has been done well and I encourage everyone to take pride in their work and to appreciate all the small and big milestones along the way. These milestones keep one going,’ said Mark Davids, Senior Superintendent of Fleet Management, City of Cape Town.

Some of the highlights of Mark’s career includes the amalgamation of the seven municipalities which formed the City of Cape Town as we know it today. He is a champion for change and embraces his role in change management.

Mark believes in keeping up with the times for personal growth and in order to grow the potential of an organisation. The other highlight was the opportunity to obtain his diploma in road transportation via the City’s bursary scheme. This diploma allowed for much growth and promotion in his career, something he will always cherish.

‘I believe everything needs to be earned through hard work and commitment. Young professionals should tap into the vast knowledge within the City and be receptive to change and constructive criticism. I have enjoyed the comradery and great team work at the City. All the interactions and collaborations between City departments to achieve our goals made the journey worthwhile. I will continue to upskill junior staff and ensure they are taught the way I was taught,’ said Davids.
