The agreement came during a phone call between the two leaders as tension has mounted since the North's reported admission to possessing nuclear weapons during talks with the United States and China last week, it said.
"Both leaders reached a consensus that the three-way Beijing talks were useful and agreed to continue consultations for a peaceful resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue according to the principle of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula," it said in a statement.
"President Roh appreciated China's role and contribution to the three-way talks, while President Hu promised that China would continue to make efforts to secure peace and stability on the Korean peninsula." It said Roh appreciated Hu's invitation and said he expected to visit China "as soon as possible." North Korea set off alarm bells last week when its chief negotiator was reported to have admitted during talks with US officials that Pyongyang possessed nuclear weapons.
The regional crisis began with the US disclosure in October last year that the North admitted to running a secret uranium-enrichment program in violation of nuclear safeguard accords.
Washington halted its oil shipment to the energy-starved North from December while Pyongyang responded by expelling UN inspectors, withdrawing from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and reactivating its mothballed plant for weapons-grade plutonium - Sapa-AFP
