"If the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the US have no problems and agree with that, China adopts a fully open attitude," Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said.
"If they don't agree, then we'll have to see".
Li was speaking to reporters after a meeting with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts, which focused on the common concern of neighboring North Korea.
South Korean Foreign Minister Yoon Young-kwan also told reporters after the meeting that Beijing had agreed to multilateral talks, which the US has been pushing for, on behalf of South Korea and Japan.
North Korea had insisted on bilateral discussions with Washington, but in April agreed to a trilateral meeting with the US and China in Beijing.
"The Chinese government agreed to having multilateral talks," Yoon told reporters.
It is unclear, however, how far Beijing will go in urging its Stalinist ally to accept a multilateral forum for the dialogue.
Beijing has repeatedly said that a dialogue process in Beijing begun in April should be continued.
It has never made a strong commitment to bring in more dialogue partners.
Li reiterated China's stance today.
"We believe the Beijing talks momentum should be kept and the Beijing talks process should be continued," Li told reporters later. - Sapa-AFP.
