Firstly, I would like to thank Pastor Maloma and his colleagues for arranging this important Prayer Service on Haiti, to pray for God’s intervention to stop the pain and suffering of the people of Haiti. We thank you for your caring spirit, ready to be in solidarity with brothers and sisters who are in a far-off land beyond our horizons. We also thank you for including Iraq and the Palestine in your prayers. We could add more to the list, like Darfur, in Sudan, but I believe the Lord will reach out to all of them.
Haiti, as you may know was the first (oldest) Black Republic in the world and the second independent nation in the Western Hemisphere. It gained its independence two centuries ago, in 1804. The Haitian Revolution (1791-1803) followed hot on the American Revolution (1763 - 1783) and the French Revolution (1789-1799).
Whilst we were taught and read about the American and French Revolutions, the Haitian Revolution was totally suppressed and kept away from our consciousness. The colonialists and racists of the time could not accept a Black Republic - a Republic of freed slaves. That is why Haiti never had peace for two centuries.
