Chief Justice appointed, deputy nominated

President Thabo Mbeki on Friday appointed the current Deputy Chief Justice Pius Langa as the new Chief Justice, with effect from June 1. The appointment was made after the President consulted and received support from the Judicial Service Commission and the leaders of parties in the National Assembly. Consequently, the position of the Deputy Chief Justice will become vacant as from June 1.

The President is required to consult with the Judicial Service Commission and leaders of parties represented in the National Assembly before appointing a Deputy Chief Justice. The President has nominated Justice DE Moseneke to the position of Deputy Chief Justice, and will be consulting with the relevant parties hereon, as required.
